Quick question? Does anyone find studying this form of musics from South America slightly mythic? I sometimes feel as I study this music much the same way as if were studying Greek or Roman mythology. Anyone have similar findings?

A few words about this volume. Caminho Livre by Ana Maria E Mauricio is noteworthy for the super-lovely flute work. Listen to the clarity of recording on the flute. Nice trilling at the end of the song with some additional scatting by the flute player. Sweet!
Track two by João Bosco is amazingly handled by arranger Rogério Duprat. This track is so major. A moment when classical ideas are merging with popular modern folk forms creating a new type of "Modernist Pop". The combination of RCA Victor on the science end of things & Rogério Duprat's trippy classical framing bring a whole new mythic quality to the language that would become MPB. Listen to the special care given to the Surdo. RCA Victor deserves gold stars for their ideas on FIDELITY. The bass register is so masterful. Grounded, full & expertly played & recorded. Fidelity is depth, width & breadth of a sound. The handling of the Surdo here is faithful to the concept of fidelity!!! The song starts like a cloudy day with promises of storm & when the choral singers emerge it is as if the sun shines again. "Baroque Samba" is what I'm left with after studying this song.
Track 3 Rosa Da Gente by Claudette Soares from 1969 is another example of perfectly selling a song. There's another version of this song on the "Coisas Do Mundo" LP by Nara Leão, also from 1969. Of the two, Claudette's version wins me over by the crispness of the arrangement. This is a lovely Marching song. When I think of the "Marches" transformed from their humble roots as military music & morphing into something as light hearted as this type of "March" I just marvel at the genius of it. I adore her voice & Claudette's reading is simply perfect & inspired. Love the counter-point flutes here as well.

Happy Birthday to me and you too, since you get the same present as me. I'm happy with it and I hope you are too? I adore Música Popular Brasileira. In this volume I pay a little extra attention to the style called Forró. I really start to really fall in love with this country style that filters it's way into the musical landscape of the Brasilian sound. There are certain sounds that I associate with this style. The acoustic guitars, the accordians and the triangle.
All I can say about this volume for now is, that when you love something it does love you back.
I feel all the love I give to this series come back to me instantly! Let's see if you feel that love too. Thank you to all of you out there who have followed me this far. You're real bunch of Sambistas & Forró-heads. As always, ENJOY!

P.S. I really want to highlight that track 3 by Burnier & Cartier. This is one of the finest examples of Brasilian Basswork. Listen to the umph on the Bass. Up front for a supporting instrument. Not just upfront, but beautifully recorded electric bass. Lovely pluckings from this player and masterfully recorded by the fucking genius's over at RCA Victor. This is that allusive "11" that they go on about in "This Is Spinal Tap". After hearing this track, this is way I want to hear the bass recorded! BOLD! VIGOROUS! LIVELY! BASS TEMPO!
One last tally for all 28 volumes = 676 tracks. Those of you who have listened thus far have the appetite of a scholar. I know, I'm one.

This is my hello to Spring post. Spring has come a few days earlier here, so I'm sharing my latest installment of the Samba Showdown series. I hope you fans of MPB enjoy this. My favorite track here, in terms of fidelity, is the Elton Medeiros track "Vazio". I marvel at the amazing tape saturation, compression and warmth of the composition & the expert handling of material. When this sits next to another track, the jump in fidelity is quite noticeable!

Ed Lincoln - Ed Lincoln [1966 Musidisc] 320 kbps - 72 mb (reup)

So much of what is contained on this really fun slice of mid-60's MPB can be sensed by the LP cover. What a great cover! I must have spent the past 2 or 3 years trying to decide what I really think of this set. At first I thought it just a sweet little record with a slightly comical edge, almost a novelty record. A nice pop vibe and an almost light-weight and humorous recording, but I've since grown to really fall in love with this latin gem.
Ed Lincoln has a warm, jumpy organ style & has put together a nice Rock/Soul/Jazz slice of MPB. Groovy would be a good word for this album. Upbeat & light-hearted too. I won't hype this and call it the greatest record ever out of Brasil, but it is a very good little record with a nice, fun vibe & every track is a winner. Also, this one is fairly rare & out of print. This was up on the Loronix site for a while, but since that page is missing in action I chose to give this another shot at being heard. As always, enjoy!

One last thing. The length of this is only 29 minutes. I really marvel at the tightness of the compositional style and production of classic 60's/70's MPB. Twelve songs in less then a half hour is very punchy Pop songwriting! How many artist can you think of today who can deliver 12 songs in such a "to the point" way? Very few, if any!

Toquinho - Toquinho [1970 RGE] 320 kbps - 97 mb

What more do I need to say about this very fine guitarist other then that he would go on to collaborate with the mighty Vinícius de Moraes to become the duo of Vinícius & Toquinho, who released many fine albums during the 70's. I'll remind those new to this page about the importance of Vinícius de Moraes, who wrote the play "Orfeu da Conceição" that would later become the film Black Orpheus (Orfeu Negro). There is no greater break out moment for the popularization of Brasilian song then the very important international film sensation "Black Orpheus" from 1959. It introduces us to not just the talents of Vinícius de Moraes, but Antônio Carlos Jobim, Luiz Bonfá & Bola Sete as well. This very fine document finds Toquinho working with Jorge Ben on a few outstanding Pop numbers, "Que Maravilha", "Zana" & "Carolina Carol Bela", but also leans towards classical styles on many numbers to show off Toquinho's learned skills on the guitar. I really enjoy this early look at this talented artist. A sweet album from 1970. This would sit nicely next to "Jorge Ben (1969)" or "Samba é de lei" by Os Originais Do Samba as a point in time. This is a little slow in spots and leans towards the classical a bit, but wins out for me as a very nice start to the 70's in Brasil. Enjoy!

P.S. Really nice mix of Classical meets MPB. The Pop numbers are great and the classical pluckings of Toquinho are majestic!

Trio Mocotó - Muita Zorra! [1971 Forma] 320 kbps - 71 mb

I remember when I started really falling in love with the music of Brasil in the late 90's this was one of the first LP's that made me a big fan of 70's MPB. This one is the Japanese remaster from the short lived Forma label. 11 tracks that spin beautifully at 32 minutes. This one just breezes by. My favorite record of the Forma imprint hands down! Not one bad number on this masterpiece. One can easy see why this band was Jorge Ben's band circa 1969-1971. There are many things in common with this band & Os Originais do Samba who also backed Jorge Ben during the same era. I adore this recording, but also really enjoy the 1975 LP which has a slightly better sound then this set. I find the LP cover of this record kinda funny. Look closely at their faces. They seem to be looking out at a mass of screaming girls and the two guys on the ends seem a little worried about pleasing all those girls while the guy in the center looks ready to jump them all. Very funny! I had this up on this page a few years back, but decided to post it again. A very solid spinner. For those of you who are just discovering the charms of 70's MPB, enjoy.

P.S. Some words that I can add to describe to this excellent session are, funky, soulful & rockin'. So don't miss this gorgeous listen. If I have to sum up what I think of this recording I would say that it spins so well that one could easily spin it twice.

Os Originais do Samba - Alegria de Sambar [1975 RCA Victor] 320 kbps - 102 mb

1975 must just be the most perfect time for Samba Pop in Brasil and this record is proof of that fact. What a great band! At the peak of their powers and amazingly recorded by RCA Victor studios. I'm very impressed with the way RCA Victor records its artist like this group and others on that label. Such depth of fidelity here that it's slightly mind-blowing. This may or may not reveal itself on the first listen, but after a few spins it really opens up sound-wise. 1975 is a peak year in MPB. Grab this and see what I speak of. May this put a smile on your grumpy butt. A big, big thank you to Zecalouro @ Loronix for this share. Since Loronix seems to be out of business, then I'll host those posts that I've suggested at this point. R.I.P. Loronix.

P.S. Since these guys sing in six part harmony they kind of remind me of "The Beach Boys", just a little more macho.
For those that get what's going on here in this era of Brasilian popular song, this record is "The BOMB". The cuica player of this band is rough and ready and the choral singing here is super outstanding. The engineers over there at RCA Victor are Albert Einstein brilliant. So says my ear.

Antônio Carlos & Jocafi - Ossos do Oficio [1975 RCA Victor] 320 kbps - 128 mb

Another fantastic outing by the duo of Antônio Carlos & Jocafi. 1975 finds this team in fine form. The rapport between these artists & the RCA Victor studios is a such a delight. These artists are the height of Brasilian Pop and they're beautifully adorned by the engineers at RCA Victor. Listen for the clarity of recording here. The bass work & choral singing are spectacular.
12 songs in 30 minutes is quite a feat! The pacing & quality are outstanding on this set. Friends of this page who enjoy a nice mid-70's example of MPB will find much to enjoy here. This one goes out to my DJ friend Paul who loves to snatch up these lovely pieces of vinyl before they disappear from God's good Earth. Get this Paul. More then enough RCA goodness here to make this worth your purchase. This sounds great with headphones! Thank you Zecalouro of Loronix for this lovely share. P.S. There are some serious clues about Pop excellence abounding in this era of recording. Listen to not just the warmth of the bass guitar, but the depth, clarity, tempo & agility of the pace setting of the bass playing. Another clue is the depth of fidelity on an instrument like the cuica. You really have to know how to record to get all of these non electric instruments to sound good. Such is the genius of RCA Victor!

I've spent the past few years posting these Samba Showdowns to take a focused look at MPB & Samba in the 70's. It's true that I like certain LP's more then others & have drawn from some LP's endlessly, but that is my style. I've never offered any volume without adding a few tracks from LP's that we've never heard before, but I do like the production & fidelity on some records more then others. It's been said that I repeat some LP's too much. Well, that's an insight about not being foolish enough to leave behind any good track off of a masterwork. If I introduced anyone to a few good albums & focused on how good they are by dipping back repeatedly to certain LP's on my compilations, then that is what will tip a DJ off to not sleep on such records. I'm more focused on continuity & in reality no 24 tracks has ever been heard in that combination before.
This page is here to look at key albums from the 70's & I feel that I've done a nice job of introducing the world to a few gems from this lovely movement. In truth, I was ready to stop at volume 12, but I listened to my inner guidance which informed me that there is nothing wrong with focusing on the LP's which I enjoy the most. This page is devoted to the LP & one's I like to call a "SOLID LISTEN". So why would I not draw heavily from the LP's that I post? This series is nothing more then an experiment in continuity. I hope you've enjoyed discovering a few great albums of the 70's in Brasil. Thanks for tuning in & hey, hop on a plane and go visit sunny Rio or Bahia.

P.S. I'm sitting on in the area of 3000 Brasilian discs & trust me when I tell you that it takes time to sort through that many titles.
I can only digest so many discs at a time and I will not lie when I say that I may study a group of discs very deeply over a few year period. It's taken me several years of study before a disc like "E Lá Vou Eu" by João Nogueira will suddenly open up like a flower & reveal its profound beauty & brilliance. So please know that there's an organic rhythm to my efforts here. It takes time for a gringo like me to fully discover this lush, tropical landscape.

The other key thing is repeats on artists over several mixes. A few names on repeat are João Bosco, Antônio Carlos & Jocafi, João Nogueira, Dóris Monteiro, Martinho Da Vila, Emilio Santiago, Candeia, Os Originais Do Samba, Paulinho Da Viola, etc, etc.

P.S. I'd like to think of what I'm doing with this series as a kind of reporting. There's a very good story over here in Brasil in the 70's. The art of recording is through the roof. These kids over here are no joke. The art of mic-ing & tape saturation & mastering is high, high art! Combine that with perhaps one of the most developed rhythm sections & melodic craft fused to masterful arranging & engineering & you've got "A Golden Age". There's a fantastic story here & I'd like very much to report on what I'm seeing here, 'coz it's great! I hope you agree?

Well folks, here's the 20th installment of the Samba Showdown series. I know that there's only a few die-hard fans of this series, so this post is for us I guess? I'm going to let the newer fans of Samba & MPB catch up with those of us who can easily listen to this glorious musical form endlessly. Should I see the list of listener feedback increase in the coming months, then I might be able to squeeze another volume out of my collection. My hope is that your feet will be tapping along with the rhythmic bliss contained on these tracks. I actually see the shining face of God when I hear this happy, upbeat and endlessly delightful music. This is a very heart centered music and I find that it connects me deeply to my heart. My favorite track on this volume is track 12 "Aliás" by Ismael Silva with it's very crisp hi-hat work, so listen for that element. Also, track 3 "Choro Chorao" by Ademilde Fonseca is an amazing example of the Choro style. Very different & what a voice. Miss Fonseca's talent stretches 25 years before this date, so she has the power of experience in her stylings.

Some really outstanding numbers here. My favs this volume are the lovely & funky "A Gente E O Mar" by Nonato E Seu Conjunto. The yummy Samba of "Tamborim" by Zé Ketti. The trancy Samba-march of Elton Medeiros performing "Sabdália Dourada" & the glorious Samba-Pop of "Rose" by Ederaldo Gentil. So many fine MPB tracks from the Jazz-pop of "Palhaçada" by the ever amazing Dóris Monteiro to the Jazz-scat of "Barendo A Porta" by Emilio Santiago to the Rock-pop of "Tamanco Malandrinho" by Tom e Dito to the groovy "Me Criei Na Beira-Mar" by Ely Arcoverde. Overall, a nice mix of the best of 70's Samba & MPB. As always, enjoy!

P.S. Listen for that juicy breakdown on track 12 "O Trem" by Zuzuca. Also listen to the clarity of recording on track 15 "Baiano Não É Palhaço" by Gordurinha. This recording is from 1962 and is 10 years ahead of the curve in terms of recording excellence on the part of the RCA Victor studio. Simply amazing.
I've never heard any culture with such a gift for choral singing as Brasil. It's one of the elements that guides my song choices from volume to volume.

This Samba Pop is on some serious A-C-I-D. A beautiful balance between softer numbers & the more "over the top" type tracks. A Masterpiece of RCA recording. Also of the two covers above, the top one fully communicates what's inside. The art director was going in the right direction with those hot pinks & orange just searing the eye and transmitting the inner content of the sounds contain within the sleave.
Additionally, I hear this one is to see a proper vinyl re-issue by Mr. Bongo U.K., so look for that.

Continuing my look at the "RCA" sound. Boy, whoever was doing the engineering over there on the boards, really knew his stuff. Amazingly recorded & beautifully performed by Manoel Conceição. This session has real MAGIC. Very short at 28 minutes, but what a 28 minutes they are. Perfect. A real jewel in the crown of the RCA sound. I adore this little record. 5 stars!

Where do we start this post? First, this page has a new contributor. This AMAZING share comes to us from our dear friend of this "Samba Hot Spot", DJ Moos of Holland.
Moos, If this was baseball, then this is a HOMERUN! I'll grade it this way. This is basically a flawless transition from the preceding set "Viagem Encantada" from 1975 & equallly as perfect. No wrong moves on this session. This Samba-Line doesn't let up for the duration of its 38 minutes. For Samba-Heads, this IS heaven. This so fits in with the unfolding energies of spring. A mighty celebration of voice, Pandeiro & much, much more. A real treat.

Hands down, my favorite Rock LP from Brasil. This record is made with all the love poured into a Beatles album. Very informed by all things Rock as can be noted by the cover with the photos of all his Pop/Rock heros. The very best of production on this one. They were very much aiming for that Abbey Road sound on this session & perhaps trying to outdo them on their production values & maybe succeeding! Let me know what you think? Pop Heaven!! This record is very SOLID & highly enjoyable. The fullest realization of the "New Guard" movement...Brasilian Rock. A Pop-Rock Masterpiece! The Production, songwriting & performance are through the roof on this record & full of some psych beauty too. The engineering on this record is a trip! For a tiny little label, CID seems to have its share of winners and this is certainly one them! From the first track, with its very crisp percussion work by Wilson Das Neves, we are off to a really nice start. Nair has a heavenly, heavenly voice, as does Jaime. Production is outstanding!
The sound here is more rural then urban. One can really hear those rustic influences on "Nigua-Ninhas E Coco Do Norte" and the track "Sabia, Diga La", which is almost a country-funk track ... BIZARRE! Spins well. A charming little record.

I love this back photo. These artists are actually looking at musical notation on a page. How refreshing!

I've reuped this one again. I can not get behind this amazing album enough. This duo made only 2 LP's together, this being the first. Once again the engineers at RCA are in peak form with their recording quality, but then again they really have something to work with here. I will mention that Octavio Burnier is the nephew of Luiz Bonfá, as can be noted by the Bonfá compositions & the dedication on the back of the record. This LP is a masterpiece of Pop Fusion. This guitar duo has such magical interplay. Listen carefully to the point/counterpoint work of the playing here. Real Pop craft on this debut. Drawing from the best elements floating around the early 70's Pop landscape. A little "Chicago", a little "Nilson", a little "Seals & Croft", A little "Yes" and a little "Crosby, Stills & Nash" to name a few of the things I hear. God bless the Japanese for remastering & reissuing this GEM. For extra added pleasure, break out the headphones & kick back & enjoy the ride. A great recording! Full of rare brilliance & oozing with fidelity. The tape saturation here is God-like. An amazing recording!

Super nice break out Bossa session recorded for the Audio Fidelity label in the very fine year of 1963 in New York. The very same year as the legendary concert held at Carnergie Hall. Gee, even the Beatles passed through the same hall the very same year. If you get my meaning? Great voice. Fine song-writer & super nice support coming from the organ playing of Mr. Walter Wanderley. This may be one of my favorite sightings of Wanderley on organ. Very nice.

In my last post I made reference to Sergio Mendes & I will once again here. If you'll notice by my Showdowns that I'm drawing from this disc again & again & not Sergio Mendes. I'm a big fan of "Foursider" by Sergio, but I'll have to admit that I'm bit more drawn to the keyboard stylings of Osmir Milito. This record is perfect in every way! Great composition, great production, amazing keyboard work & arranging by Osmir & superb vocal work too. The pacing on this LP is flawless. No wrong move here. Well, I guess today will be a Samba Saturday. With all due respect to "Trix Vinyl Rips Blogspot" for the inside information on these recordings for the London imprint by the Brazilian Singers. Trix has told me that these are super rare meetings of some very fine talents fused to the SAMBA REVIVAL MOVEMENT. The Golden Boys,Trio Esperança & Evinha are some of the artists involved here.
I really enjoy the way this album presents itself. Almost a Samba "Hit Parade" or better, an expanded form of the Potpourri which the Brasilian's do ever so well. This is a nice look at what was bubbling on the Samba Pop horizon of that year. Nicely done & full on Samba bass drum, cuica & whistles in abundance all the way through, not to mention that lovely choral section.

I had presented the 1974 session last year via "Trix Vinyl Rips Blogspot" & I must confess that of the two sets that I lean more towards the 1974 one, but this very fine LP would serve as an excellent warm up to that fantastic album. No worries about the quality here, because we compare apples to oranges & both are very tasty! OK? Enjoy!

The heavens were shining upon our guide of this page Greg when he found this lovely LP. Excellent example of that early 70's Odeon sound. I doubt this recording ever saw a reissue & if there were to be one, it would be the Japanese who would most likely issue it. I would also guess that João Só had one shot at a recording date with a studio of this stature & boy did the Odeon studios hook him up. A stunning example of early 70's MPB. Samba-Pop doesn't get any better then this. Heavenly!

A big "Thank You" to Loronix blogspot for this post & this share. I choose to give this very special Samba LP a little extra exposure because I'd rather not see a gem like this get lost in the shuffle. Great Year. Great Artist. Great Label. Spins beautifully & has outstanding production. Nelson Cavaquinho is in peak form & the Odeon studio is right there to see that all goes well in the recording of this session. Very, very strong guitar work here, cuica too & the choral work is quite heavenly as well. I would safely call this a masterpiece of the Samba form. One that Samba lovers should enjoy having in their collection. Enjoy & thank you Zeca for this mighty post & gracious share. Much love.

P.S. I could spin a record like this 2 or 3 times in a row it's so enjoyable! The studios have finally figured out how to record this music to best effect at this time. Just listen to how the Samba Bass Drum & Cuica are placed in the sound. We are listening to not just beautiful composition here, but the art of where to place the microphones for the best sound. The form is hitting a peak & this is one of its triumphs!

I post this one simply to provide some context to my Edu Lobo offering. This lovely lady is the wife of Edu & this happens to be one the great Bossa sessions. Fans of Nara or any of the lovely ladies of this era such as Dóris Monteiro, Claudette Soares or Gracinha Leporace will love this. One of the all time great LP covers. Great design! Every time I play this record I'm singing track one "Adriana" for days. A very enjoyable listen & a fine debut.

Edu Lobo - Sergio Mendes Presents Edu Lobo [1970 A&M] 256 kbps - 63 mb

Nice break out session recorded in the U.S. for Sergio Mendes's A&M label with songs in English & brilliant scat vocalese by this very fine singer/song-writer by the name of Edu Lobo. This would sit nicely next to any of the other song-writers of that generation, namely, Joyce, Milton Nascimento & Chico Buarque De Hollanda to name a few. This record has some very strong offerings & it also has some flaws in my opinion. Since this was recorded in 1969, I guess they were trying to sell this artist to the Beatles generation by adding "Hey Jude" to this set. Personally I think this record would have been a better document without that composition on it. I'll site Milton Nascimento's reading of "Norwegian Wood" on his Minas LP as a better example of a Beatles number handled to better effect. That said, there are some stunning examples of Brasilian songcraft here, most noteably, "Zanzibar", "Ponteio", "Even Now", "Crystal Illusions", & "Casa Forte". This is an excellent example of crossover Brasilian Folk-Pop circa 1970.
The real plus here besides Edo's fine voice & guitar is Hermeto Pascoal on piano & flute duties, so please listen for his work here.
As I say, I think this record is slightly flawed in terms of pacing in that it loses pace around track 8, but besides that this record more then makes up for that by being an outstanding specimen of Brasilian Folk-Jazz. Enjoy!

A super lovely mid-70's Lp of Sambas by Adoniran Barbosa. This is his second Lp for the Odeon label. This one is very out of print & was shared with me via a SLSK buddy. I had posted the first one last year & if this is enjoyed, then I'll gladly repost that one. OK? Only 29 minutes of music here, so you're sure to not be bored by this set. Enjoy this amazing recording of deep Sambas. Very, very nice & a solid listen. Don't forget to roll that "R" when you say Barrrrrbosa...ha, ha.

Greetings & a happy New Year since this is my first post of the new year. I'll pick up where I left off with my last post. Here is the 1974 Odeon set from Adoniran Barbosa which pairs perfectly with the '75 LP. This is listed as one of the essential MPB/Samba albums on the Luiz Americo tribute page on my sidebar. A really wonderful record & all compositions are penned by Adoniran. Spins beautifully & this is truly a great Samba album from a great era. This is my first contact with this artist & I must admit that I actually like the 1975 a little more but, this record is equally superb. As always, enjoy!

P.S. Another thing to consider here is that most of this artist compositions go back as early as 20 years before this session. So the bulk of this album is a reworking of this fantastic composers body of songs filtered through the lens of song-craft of 70's engineering & arranging. Bravo for this!

Friends of this page will know that I'm a big fan of the RCA Victor label during the 70's. This is another lovely example of that studio sound. Ismael Silva recorded very few albums, so that makes this all the more special. Sorry about the smaller size on this, but it was shared with me via a SLSK buddy. Please listen to the wonderful warmth of production on this very fine Samba LP. Ismael got a great voice & excellent guitar style. Sweet choral & cuica work here too. Very fleshed out production. A great artist.

Stunning example of late 60's Bossa-Pop served up U.S. style by the Verve label. Great on every level. Superb songwriting. Excellent guitar work & vocals by Luiz. The icing on this already amazing session is Sivuca on accordion & scat vocals, so please listen for his work here. Not one wrong move on this session & that's the electric bass replacing the upright for this very fresh update of what Brasilian Jazz should sound like in 1967. This has real magic, charm & innocence. A light breeze of a session. Sway in the palms with Luiz, Sivuca & gang. Enjoy!

Gee, I don't think you can find any funkier Country style pop then this. Dominguinhos Forró gets the deluxe disco glam finish from the Philips studios. I think this record is a total sleeper & is again, one that aged really well. Not only is the composition & performance through the roof on this, but the production is out of this world. A very nice listen from start to finish with some very subtle surprises. For those that enjoy a little accordion pop, this stands out in that genre in a big way. Enjoy!

P.S. I want to say that the main focus of this page is to look at key LP's of the 70's in Brasil. These 2 are classy examples of "Live Recording". Who ever was the engineer for these recordings really knew how to mic & mix that board. I find the fact that these are recorded before a live audience to be simply amazing examples of the art of recording!
Also, on the surface these projects are to poke fun at the early 70's musical landscape of Brasil but turn out to be something much more then that. There's some great groovin' on these sets.

If I were going to suggest one LP by this guitar master it would have to be this masterpiece of Bossa Nova Jazz. Why? Just for his flawless reading of his very own composition "Manhã de Carnaval" would be reason alone to hear this recording. Since this session dates from 1962, then this is truly one the breakout sets for the Verve U.S. label. Not one bad track here & one that your sure to come back to again & again. A very great outing for Bonfá & the Verve imprint. Super warm & great playing by all involved. Get this!

Saturdays are usually reserved for Samba, but today we go Forró. I had posted this one before, but alas I did not properly endorse this one. Let me rectify that by giving this one a big J Thyme hug & taking us a little more deeply into this Rolls Royce of the Forró set.
This record is in a class all by itself. What we have here is a level of production not usually afforded to this rustic form.
Philips rolls out the red carpet for the mighty Dominguinhos on this session. From the first toots of Dominguinhos honey toned accordian & the super crisp percussion work, by I would imagine, Wilson Das Neves whose tones are so clear & the perfect counterpoint to Dominguinhos sweet, sweet melodic stylings. This is a very sneaky one. It is somewhat a "fusion" record & to make matters more exotic, I would call a recording like this "Electric Forró" or even better "Disco-fied Forró". This set is actually on the bizarre side & if anyone knows the Polka form, then please offer me a Polka set that can go "Toe-To-Toe" with this Champagne PUNCH. Since this very fine recording is from 1976, I'll place this firmly in the "Disco" era & I'm sure any DJ with a brain in his head was dropping this magnificent slab of wax on unsuspecting listeners.
Thank you Greg for this super lovely share. Only a GENIUS could introduce me to such a beautiful recording. That's you Greg!

Excellent example of mid 70's Brasilian Folk-Jazz of the Singer-Songwriter variety. This one has a beautiful Electric Jazz finish framing his inspired Folk style. The sound could be described as "Fusion". The playing here is very fleshed out by all players involved & perfectly laid to tape by the engineers over at EMI Odeon studios. Luiz Gonzaga Jr. really shines on this set & mid 70's in Brasil is such a "No Brainer" as far as quality is concerned. This one tops out at 40 minutes, but it manages to stay focused for the whole of the length. Very solid & a completely engaging listen. I love this recording. Flawless & very inspired songwriting here. When it comes to "It". This one has it! Enjoy!

Since I've already posted another record from the same year with the Célia, I thought this would play nicely off of that post. 1971 is indeed a great year for releases from Brasil & this one's got some gas in its tank & it's revving that engine to show off what its got. VROOOOOMMM. The Bass playing on this is zoomin' right along & got a nice funky bottom too. Outstanding horn & string work as well. I would have to call this one Brasilian Soul Pop with a lot of fidelity and beautiful singing by Renata & chorus. Very nice set & one I'm falling more in love with at each listen. Much of this era is so much that way. One can easily come over here & marvel at the exceedingly high level of song craft during this decade which is the 70's. Try this for another example of Brasilian Pop at its best. Super good fun here!

This post goes out to my buddy Arnaud in Paris. During my stay there in July I was shocked when I asked Arnuad what he thought of Marcos. He said he wasn't very impressed with Marcos. Well Arnaud I seriously beg you to reconsider your dismissal of this very, very talented songwriting duo of Marcos & his lyricist brother Paulo Sergio Valle. This soundtrack for the Som Livre label showcases their prowess brilliantly! Only 28 minutes long & made even shorter when we consider that 2 of the compositions are two unusual drum experiments by Marlos Nobre ending each side of the LP. A flawless example of Marco's & Paulo Sergio's talents & handled nicely by various artists. Arnaud please try this & reconsider? Plus, that's Marcos lovely wife Angla Valle singing on track 3. Very tight & full of genius!! Enjoy!

This post is for my friends who dig A BEAUTIULLY RECORDED ELECTRIC SESSION. Super amazing set recorded in France by two Brasilian expatriates with a yummy Electric Bass & Keyboard sound fused to Brasil Folk with a nice, soft psych edge. Fans of Joyce & Milton Nascimento will marvel at this. Beautifully composed, performed & recorded. This is a very fine Brasilian Folk record with a lovely electric Jazz finish & would sit nicely next to my other post "Jaime & Nair" or "Burnier & Cartier" for that duo sound. Outstanding Guitars, Bass work & Keys & Nana Vasconcelos really shines here on percussion duties & did I mention the exceptional voice of Téca & Ricardo. Quite Heavenly. EXTREMELY BEAUTIFUL & HIGHLY ACCESSABLE! A flawless 37 minute MASTER-WORK. This LP soars like an Eagle. Enjoy!

This duo was formed by Teca Calazans and Ricardo Vilas in France, where they lived from 1969 to 1979; they recorded seven albums. Jardin Exotique (1979) included Cartola's "Tive Sim" with the participation of the composer. In the same year, they returned to Brazil where they still recorded two albums.

I really care to up this again so I can lavish some praise on this very unique meeting of Brasilian composition & arranging joining forces with U.S. Soul/Jazz trends of that era. You fans of early 70's Soul & Jazz will be at home here & the icing on the cake is that this is a full on Brasilian effort as well. Moacir brings to this session all of the beauty that is Brasilian compostion melded to a wicked sense of all that is in harmony with U.S. stylings of the period. I hold this little 36 minute set in the highest regard & safely call it a masterpiece. I think a recording like this has aged very well. Let's see if you agree?

Lovely little 28 minute set for the Philips label by the very pretty voice of Gracinha Leporace. Just a light, breezy disc that represents the late 60's Brasilian sound so well. I post this more to highlight this singers work since she recorded on so many fine sessions.

Wikipedia says:
Gracinha Leporace is the wife of notable Bossa Nova musician Sérgio Mendes. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Before becoming a member of Brasil '77, she was the lead singer in a Bossa Nova group called Bossa Rio. She is the second wife of Sérgio Mendes. She was a member of his Brasil '77 line-up and sings backup vocals and occasional lead vocals on his songs.

She can be heard on all of these LP's to very good effect. I love the Grupo Manifesto Nº2 especially!

She can also be heard on this amazing session. "Raizes" or its U.S. title "Primal Roots" for A&M in 1972.

I present this recording to make some distinctions about this flawless session. First, this is perhaps my favorite of the Divas over here in Brasil. Since we are no longer in an era where Opera is flowing into the popular form, this type of voice sits very well with my classical leanings. When I conjure up the word Diva this lady will certainly fit the part. I love the ease, perfect pitch & phrasing of this finely tuned Jazz singer. 27 minutes in length with each song about 2 minutes long. I adore this kind of songwriting. Tight & very focused song choices & arrangements & Dóris really knows how to sell each & every number on this masterpiece of Bossa Nova / MPB. This record is so fine, I could listen to it twice in a row, it's that good.
This is the 1996 Bomba re-issue from Japan & overflowing with fidelity. It's in not only my top picks of this era, but one of the all time great recordings of this mighty musical culture. 5 stars! OK?

I've just returned from a month long stay in Paris & had a chance to listen to this lovely LP with my host Arnaud who like me is quite fond of a lovely female voice kissing the eardrums. I'm reupping this one for those who missed it the first time I posted it. I'll confess that I find this LP a little slow at the beginning of the disc, but after the first 2 songs this very fine LP really kicks in a big way. Célia happens to have a very sexy voice & the songwritiing & arrangements really make this very much worth your attention. I really enjoy this session & what a heavenly voice. Stand outs are "Durango Kid", "David" & "To Be" & "Abrace Paul Mc Cartney Por Mim". Thank you Greg for this share & super nice find. Brasilian Pop at its very best & a very nice look at a fine group of emerging songwriters. This lovely lady can convey a song properly! A real talent. Superb. Enjoy!

There's so much to say about this record, so let me say a few things about it. Would there have even had been a Bossa Nova movement which reached worldwide notice without the help of Vinícius de Moraes? I don't think so! Since Vinícius was the author of Black Orpheus, then it is he who provided the biggest push to the Bossa movement & its breaktrough.

Wikipedia says:
Black Orpheus (Orfeu Negro in Portuguese) is a 1959 film made in Brazil by French director Marcel Camus. It is based on the play Orfeu da Conceição by Vinícius de Moraes, which is an adaptation of the Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice, setting it in the modern context of Rio de Janeiro during the Carnaval. The film was an international co-production between production companies in Brazil, France and Italy.
The film is particularly renowned for its soundtrack by bossa nova legend Antonio Carlos Jobim, featuring songs such as "Manhã de Carnaval" (written by Luiz Bonfá) and "A felicidade" that were to become Bossa nova classics.
Black Orpheus won the Palme d'Or at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival as well as the 1960 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the 1960 Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film.

This recording finds Vinícius paired with the very gifted guitarist/singer Toquinho with whom he would enjoy a fruitful partnership for the better part of the 70's. Considering that Toquinho is half the age of Vinícius, then this is a testament of cross-generational collaboration of the highest order. These two fit together so well. Just listen to the perfect harmony these two achieve on the vocal level. Vinícius & Toquinho began their work together on the RGE label in the early 70's, but I find the Philips recordings to be much more fleshed out. This is one I place very high on my list of all time great recordings & one that belongs in the top 10. Listen for Bertrami on synth & Quarteto Em Cy on choral backup duties. A true masterwork & this Japanese issue is lovingly remastered. A very nice listen & a perfect LP to remember Vinícius de Moraes & his teaming with Toquinho by. Enjoy.

Since I'm looking at the early genius of João Donato, then this is a perfect place to start. This recording precedes the Bud Shank LP by two years. Vibist Dave Pike lays down a perfect session of all Donato material & is joined by Clark Terry on horn & Kenny Burrell on guitar. If I had one critique of this early U.S. recording of this Brasilian talent & his material it would be with the drummer. A Brasilian on the kits would have been a better choice, but that said, this is still a very enjoyable listen. If you like vibraphones, then please don't miss this excellent vibed-out take on Donato. A winner & this is the Japanese issue & nicely remastered. Kinda deluxe in its own low-key way. Enjoy!

I post this to go along with my other João Donato set. There was a big wave crashing on U.S. soil circa 1963 & this is part of that wave of Brasilians who would make the United States their home & bring their songcraft to a market that could swing with what they were swinging. This session finds João Donato being embraced by the U.S. Jazz players, namely Bud Shank. Bud is one to spot talent & grabs this artist's growing songbook & hops right into the studio with João in tow. Beautiful breakout set for this traveling salesman of song. Lovingly handled by Budd Shank on Alto Sax, João Donato on Piano, Rosinha De Valença on Guitar, Sabastion Neto on Bass & Chico Batero on drums. For Jazz heads & those who enjoy taking an early look at the genius of this gifted pianist. Very nice!

Since I'm on a nice early Bossa Jazz dip, then I think a set like this would be a nice change of pace. but not taking us away too far the overall vibe of this page. Here we have a stunning set of Bossa inspired soundtrack Jazz handled expertly by the finest Italian composers. Hats off to whoever put together this excellent look at how flawless Bossa Nova was done in Italy. Some records just spin so well & this is one of them. This is such a winning set. I love how this retains all of the integrity of Bossa Nova & yet remains distictly Italian all at once. These tracks are taken from Italian films from the late 60's through the late 70's. This is one I return to again & again. Total ear-candy & if you own a nice sound system, all the better. Beautifully paced & expertly selected. This is such a groovy listen. Don't miss this.

Since I have a large collection of Brasilian discs & have heard what I consider to be more then enough to make a serious evaluation of some of the most important recordings of this culture & this era, I'll step in here & place a crown on this masterful achievement of artistry & excellence. If I were to have a top 20 of all time great recordings of the 70's, this would certainly be in the top 10. This is one of the most perfect LP's that I've ever heard. João's skill on the keyboard & his songwriting reach a milestone on this spectacular session. Considering that this artist was around in the pre-Bossa days of the late 40's like Jobim, Gilberto, Alf & Vinícius de Moraes, then this set was, let's say, 22 years in the making. Some artists put in many years to develop their craft to its fullest & that mastery is achieved here in a big, big way! Bravo to João Donato for this masterpiece of not only MPB, but of international Jazz of this era.
I think this recording is that rare achievement of perfection only attained by a few people & perhaps only one time in their career. João has the most amazing phrasing that I've ever heard on any keyboard player. Melodies like gems. Perfectly formed & sparkling a light that can only come directly from a divinely loving heart. This artist is blessed with a gift & he's freed his talent to a place of unparalleled beauty. Artistry should cause us to be in awe of it's magnificence & this one does!
Please listen carefully for João's mastery of the piano & his nimble touch & impeccable phrasing. I give this my highest rating that I could bestow on a recording. That's 6 stars of a possible 5. Magnificent!

P.S. Flawless Japanese issue with heavenly remastering. Also, that's João on arrangement duties & he doubles on trombone as well on this beautifully embellished work. That's talent! Very nice guitar & bass work here, so listen to the warmth on those players too & that's Nãna Caymmi lending her lovely voice to track 11 "Mentiras". A lot to love here!

Also, if pressed to make a distinction about the various recordings before & after this MASTERPIECE, I would have to say that "A Bad Donato" [1970 Muse] is not as fully realized & not recorded in Brasil like this set & "Lugar Comum" [1975 Philips] is a bit overproduced & loses pace. This is his most focused set, but his composing talents are beautifully realized on both, Bud Shank & His Brazilian Friends [1964 Pacific Jazz] & Bossa Nova Carnival [1962 New Jazz/Prestige] Dave Pike plays the music of João Donato. Both are fantastic early examples of this genius. The New Sound of Brazil [1965 RCA Victor] is also very, very worthy.

Since I love Point/Counterpoint, I find that what João's doing here vocally to be much more fleshed out in the way of highlighting his outstanding gift for counterpoint phrasing then on "A Bad Donato". Nuff said.

Hey everybody! I see that this lovely session is not up on any pages so I thought I'd reup it for a few of you to peep. This one was posted on Quimsy's Mumbo Jumbo, but the link seems to have expired. I offer it here, but ask that if you find yourself enjoying it that you purchase it from Dusty Groove America. OK? I don't think I can top the words offered by Quimsy, so I use his review & thank you Quimsy for the amazing information on this very fine one off set.

Picture a band that features musicians from schools so different as the multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal, the post-tropicalist guitar hero Lanny Gordin, bossa nova pianist Cido Bianchi (former Milton Banana Trio), acoustic guitarist Olmir 'Alemão' Stocker and jazz bassist Nilson da Matta. The surprising meeting happened in 1968 and helped write a little known chapter in the history of instrumental music in Brazil called Brazilian Octopus, whose only release is hunted by record collectors. "This is undoubtedly the strangest Brazilian group ever", writes Marcelo Dolabela in his dictionary ABZ do Rock Brasileiro (printed on Estrela do Sul, 1987). "At that time, we didn't care about the money, we just wanted to play. It was a wonderful experience", recalls Celso Bianchi, also a maestro and arranger.

Brazilian Octopus was lined up in São Paulo in the beginning of 1968 by Lívio Rangan, manager of a textile factory that promoted musical fashion shows to promote their products. "Lívio used to like me a lot. He even claimed he was gonna turn me into the new Sergio Mendes", tells the musician, appointed by Rangan as the group's coordinator. In fact, Brazilian Octopus was born with uncommon space in the market: a contract for a year of work that included three months of rehearsals during which the musicians received salaries. At that time, the band also recorded an album with Japanese saxophonist Sadao Watanabe.

'Gigs In A Cage'
The music director of the shows was the tropicalist maestro Rogério Duprat. Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso and Eliana Pittman also participated. "I dressed up in a lion costume in many of those shows. The whole group dressed up in animal costumes and played inside a cage", Hermeto recalls. Despite their very different backgrounds, the members knew one another because they all hung out in the same venues, specially the nightclub Stardust (managed by Lanny's father), where Hermeto, Bianchi and Alemão often performed. "I remember that we were rehearsing when the news was broken that guitarist Wes Montgomery had passed away", says Alemão. "As usual, there were little quarrels", claims the saxophonist Carlos Alberto, noticing that the "incompatibility of ideas" was frequent within the group, especially when it was time to choose the set list. It was different when, after a few months into rehearsals, the event manager suggested that the group make an album. "Lívio Rangan thought that we could insert a number of radio-friendly songs into the disc", recalls Alemão, who was in charge of contacting songwriters with whom he had worked before. "I gathered a number of unreleased songs which were refused by Cido Bianchi, who was more interested in playing jazz. One of them was Jorge Ben's País Tropical", teases the guitarist.

"Even when we had to play French or Italian songs that were part of the factory's repertoire, we always did it with dignity. That work influenced many of the things that I do today. That's why I reckon music is universal. Everybody is influenced by everybody else", says Hermeto, who was responsible for coordinating collective arrangements after a few misunderstandings popped up among the musicians. He also wrote two themes featured in this very rare LP : Rhodosando and Chayê, which were pop and Cuban cha-cha-cha fusions. "I got inspiration from the fashion models to write those songs. I already played nightclubs, then, so I could play many different styles", remembers the musician from Alagoas.

'Unexpected Extras On The Cover'
Other members also contributed with original compositions: Alemão (Canção Latina, written with Vitor Martins), vibraphone player João Carlos Pegoraro (Summerhill) and Lanny (O Pássaro). The recording of the latter provoked an argument between Hermeto and the sound technicians. "Due to the song's repetitive melody, he wrote the counterpoint to be played by two flutes, just to liven it up a bit. But when he heard the mixed track, the counterpoint had vanished. Hermeto was so furious that he wanted to beat the technician up ", laughs saxophonist Carlos Alberto, who also recalls that Pascoal does not appear on the cover of the album because he couldn't make it to the photo shooting. A clerk from an advertising agency sat by the piano, instead - as well as an old timer, a dog and a child, who had nothing to do with the making of the album, but appeared on the cover. The shooting took place on a piece of land that looked like the surface of the moon - a reference to the space race between the USA and former USSR.

Produced by Mário Albanese and Fausto Canova, the album Brazilian Octopus features new arrangements for Casa Forte (Edu Lobo), Pavane (Gabriel Fauré), Canção de Fim de Tarde (Walter Santos and Thereza Souza), Gosto de Ser Como Sou and Gamboa (Mário Albanese and Ciro Pereira), exploring a characteristic sound yielded by the flutes with the vibraphone, organ and guitars. "We never received a penny for that LP. It seems that it was released in Europe, even enjoying a little success", says Carlos Alberto, who claims that the members of the band tried to talk to Fermata's CEOs and get to know about the sales. Instead of checks, all they got was laudatory comments and an invitation to make a new album. Figuring that they would not get any money from it, they turned it down. The octet ended right there and then.

I present this disc to go with my last 3 posts. This is so in an easy spirit & could almost be passed over as not really that important, but it kinda is. I think this record is important on few levels. First, God bless Gary for his warm embrace of the hottest young team of songwriters called The Beatles. How Jazz of him to cool down their hot tunes with a lovely Gary McFarland reading. Perhaps he shows how "Elevator Music" they are already? The other clue is the Samba in the title. This is so aware of all that's blooming on the early 60's landscape. From a kiss to James Bonds "From Russia With Love" to Bossa, to "The Beatles", to "La Vie En Rose". This is only a 29 minute little breeze of a set, but what a lovely breeze just passed. Full of warmth & a very light heart. I think this would sit nicely with the other 3 discs that I've just presented. One last thing, this is the very same moment on the Verve label as "Getz/Gilberto" [1963 Verve] U.S. & "Getz/Gilberto #2" [1964 Verve] U.S. & we know how large those sets loom. "Soft Samba" was one of the better selling LP's of that time & that's good considering that "The Beatles" were getting ready to take over for the next few years & would basically push Jazz way out of the limelight FOREVER. A sweet Jazz album of excellent vibes & scat vocalizing by Gary & gang. Enjoy.

Before I present this post I'd like to set this up a bit. Since it's baseball season, I'd like to make reference to that sport. This post & the two next to this post, Les Masques - Brasilian Sound [1969 CBS] France & The Silhouettes - Conversations With The Silhouettes [1969 Segue] U.S., are so in the same ballpark that I would love to load the bases & perhaps bring in a heavy hitter to bring them home & score 4 runs.
This one was recorded in Germany for the MPS label in 1969 by U.S. Jazzman George Duke. His discovery of 5 Philippine sisters who sing amazing 5 part harmony is such a catch. He frames them perfectly in a Bossa Jazz setting & does for German Jazz what Quarteto Em Cy do in Brasil, wonderful MPB styled Jazz-Pop except sung in English. I could qualify a record like this by comparing it to Austin Powers groovy, but I won't. Just some sweet 5 part vocal Jazz served up Bossa style by 5 Philippine sisters is enough to bring back my fondest memories of Bill Murray's lounge singer. I'll bet he wished he discovered these ladies. This post goes out to my buddy Greg who shares a taste like me for yummy Jazz parfait. I hope you do too? Enjoy!

Excellent example of Bossa inspired French Jazz Pop. Words to convey a lovely little 30 minute set such as this would be, "Groovy", "Easy", "Fun", "Breezy", "Lighthearted" & they would perfectly get the idea across. I think this record has aged well & yes, I think Austin Power's romps would be even more memorable with liberal sprinklings of tracks from a disc like this. Spare a half an hour & float on this French perfumed Bossa cloud of vocal Jazz. Lovely!!!

Of the three of these international Bossa Jazz sets, I'd say this is perhaps my favorite of the three, but all three are certainly in the same ballpark both stylistically & of the same era & are also stunning examples of Bossa's influence on World Jazz Pop. This would also play nicely off of my Italian Bossa Jazz set that I've posted as another point on this subject. Produced by Nathan Haynes in the U.S. for the Seque label. This record has some real chops & some trippy influences colliding within this lovely swirl of U.S. Bossa Jazz Funk. I hope the impact of hearing these three together keeps us focused on the goal of a page like this to cross refer information for the ultimate MPB experience. This is a seriously fantastic record. Flutes, Vibes, Electric bass & groovy femmes to tickle the fancy. "Norwegian Wood" gets a very nice rendering here. I adore this record. Aged really well & not one bad number on this foxy ass set. Love the flute work on this & the female vocalist is super yummy & accessible! Flawless.

If I ever needed someone to read me the telephone book, then I would certainly hire Emilio. Truly one of the greatest vocalist of this era. These first albums by him are just perfect. Not a Bossa Nova album per se, but it is a shining example of U.S. Latin Jazz served to perfection by the Verve studios. Gary's got a really great style. Warm vibes & a sweet scat style to match. I present this to go with the "Soft Samba" Lp already on this page. A very enjoyable session. Japanese Issue here. Full of warmth & fidelity. A total sleeper. Enjoy!

What can I say about this yummy late 60's Brasilian Jazz-Pop crossover LP? LOTS! Those of us who've had that dopey song "Happy Birthday" sung to us, have never heard it sung this way. This version of that holiday favorite gets that Braz-Jazz reworking that's just the "Cat's Meow". VERY, VERY MEMORABLE! Next we're off to the "Caberet", which is a big tip off that, yes, he was dating young Liza Minelli at the time of this recording. I don't know who was smarter, but Luiz laid it to wax before she would do the film. So there! Good move Luiz. On both Liza & her taste in music. The whole record's great & there's even a Bossa version of "Home On The Range" which strikes me as very late 60's & slightly on a hit of acid. Home On The Range? Bizarre! A super sweet follow up to "Barra Limpa" from 1967 on the verve label also. This time with Walter Wanderley taking over where Sivuca left off on Barra Limpa. I simply adore any early to late 60's Verve LP's. This is another perfect example of their leading edge for U.S. Latin Jazz. Get this!

Do you like piano wizards? I do. What we have here is a glorious example of piano mastery & a beautiful self produced session. Recorded over a two year period. Half recorded in the United States & the other half in São Paulo.
Guilherme Vergueiro is a gifted keyboardist with a graceful scat style to match. Stand out player on this session is Nana Vasconcelos on percussion duties, so please listen for his work here. This is an amazing session & those who love piano will simply adore the styling of Mr. Vergueiro. There isn't one person involved in this recording that doesn't sparkle like a diamond. Really! Enjoy!

I dedicate this post to the late great DJ from the New York area Frankie Crocker whose show on WBLS in New York City would play track three "Dentro De Voce (Inside Of You)" from this LP on his broadcasts. Thank you Frankie. You're remembered!

Frankie "Hollywood" Crocker (December 18, 1937, Buffalo, New York, USA - October 21, 2000, North Miami Beach, Florida) was a famous New York radio DJ. (Coined "Hollywood" for his keen sense of showmanship and self-marketing tactics.) According to popeducation.org, Frankie began his career in Buffalo, then moved to Soul station WWRL New York before being hired by top-40 WMCA in 1969. He later worked for WBLS-FM as program director, taking that station to the top of the ratings during the late 1970s. He sometimes called himself the "Chief Rocker", and he was as well known for his boastful on-air patter as for his off-air flamboyance. When Studio 54 was at the height of its popularity, Crocker rode in through the front entrance on a white stallion. In the studio, before he left for the day, Crocker would light a candle and invite female listeners to enjoy a candlelight bath with him. He signed off the air each night to the tune "Moody's Mood For Love" by vocalese crooner King Pleasure. Crocker, a native of Buffalo, coined the phrase "urban contemporary" in the 1970s, a label for the eclectic mix of songs that he played. He was the master of ceremonies of shows at the Apollo Theater in Harlem and was one of the first V.J.'s on VH-1, the video cable channel. He also played host of the TV show Solid Gold. As an actor, Crocker appeared in five films, including Cleopatra Jones, Five on the Black Hand Side, and Darktown Strutters.
He is credited with introducing Manu Dibango's "Soul Makossa" to American audiences.

Super-rare selection. Fantastic Guitar & Organ work on this one. Nice Conga & Cuíca work too.
This little record has tons of charm. Has a nice nasty lo-fi edge to the whole sound, giving it a nice garage rock feel. Reminding me at times of a raw Jamaican session or a Turkish rock recording at others. I don't think they had a big budget for the record, but as I say it makes up for it with charm. Enjoy!

Waltel Branco is a guitar player & band leader. This session recorded for CBS Brasil is my favorite recording by this artist. Part easy listening, part big band funk & very listenable. Great choral work and listen for Waltel's guitar runs. Very, very nice. This is a masterpiece of its kind. Not a Samba record & not even a MPB set per se, but an outstanding international pop spinner. Enjoy!
